[PBP2013] Eris’ gift

A quince with the word inscribed on it: KALLISTI

“For the fairest.”

One of Eros’ epithets is KALLISTOS; the fairest. Anybody with any sense knew that her brother had a hand in that, as well. She’s never been conventionally beautiful, and sure, She’s made it Her mission to upset the status quo, even amongst the Theoi themselves, but He’s never objected to Her presence —She’s his baby sister. They exist to counter and to compliment each-other.

Even when you like something, that’s not a guarantee that you’re going to like everything about it; and human history is ripe with stories of people who loved each-other more than anything, but just couldn’t manage to get along or live together. Or maybe you do, but it comes at an immeasurable price.

We could not better ourselves without the strife and trouble that Eris brings with her. No great blade was made by letting the iron rest in the Earth. The fires of conflict are where we are tested and find out what we are really all about. I feel it is a shame that she and Ares get a bit neglected. Her relationship to Eros is quite fitting though, anyone who has ever had a lover knows that it isn’t always smooth sailing. The depth and limits of your love for someone is most tested when you are royally pissed at them, not when you are cuddling after sex (though the latter is a lot more fun)
